PR stunt

Someone shared interesting insight on Mr. Reeves’s PR stunt.

To me, this feels like it's just part of a massive corporate-driven PR campaign for Bill & Ted 3 - Face The Music. The timing is just too perfect:

  • The 1st week of June - Keanu and Alex W graduation message for San Dimas HS graduates
  • The 2nd week of June (last week) - New trailer for Bill & Ted 3 dropped
  • The 3rd week of June (yesterday) - 15 min Zoom call with Keanu for charity announced
  • The 3rd week of June (yesterday): release date for Bill & Ted 3 has been moved up 1 week. The new release date is Aug 14, 2020. Guess what? Marfa Invitational is also Aug 13-16, 2020!
Coincidence? I think not. In show bu$ine$$ (strong emphasis on bu$ine$$), nothing is a coincidence.

  • The market value for this call with Keanu is set at $10,000. The current bid is at $17,600. Someone also set up an auto bid. Hmmm, who could that someone be? I have a feeling that the movie studio is the auto-bidder here
  • An ordinary average movie fan cannot afford this bid and a wealthy movie fan would NOT pay this amount for a measly 15-min Zoom call
  • Camp Rainbow Gold (CRG) is a large sophisticated non-profit with lots of Hollywood connections and support. CRG is *well-known* for getting celebs and they love celebrity PR!
  • CRG is very similar to another famous charity: Project Angel Food (PAF) in Los Angeles. Both CRG and PAF are very well-connected with Hollywood. Everyone in Hollywood knows which non-profit organizations are the "go-to charities" for when a movie studio or a celebrity wants fluffy feel good PR pictures and positive buzz.
For me, it's déjà vu all over again. The same massive corporate-driven PR campaign was conducted exactly one year ago to promote JW3. The interviews, the magazine covers, the Saint Laurent campaign, the Handprint & Footprint Ceremony at the TCL Chinese Theatre that was organized, publicized, and paid for by Lionsgate, etc.

But this time it's for Bill & Ted 3. And with the pandemic, social distancing, BLM protests, the movie studio behind Bill & Ted 3 have to come up with more "creative" ways to promote Keanu Reeves and of course his new movie coming out soon: Bill & Ted 3.

Compare this to Keanu's personal philanthropy. I believe that Keanu's personal philanthropy is real and authentic but it's always been deeply personal and *private* to him. His decades long collaboration with the Make-A-Wish Foundation has never been publicized or reported by the tabloids. Countless stories of everyday people and fans sharing countless stories of how generous Keanu is in countless different ways. Keanu is known for his *private* philanthropy. This is very different. This has all the hallmarks and signatures of a corporate movie studio PR marketing strategy.

And of course, as always AG will hitch a ride to the stars in any way she can because as Keanu's star rises and rises, so will her star as well. Her association with him, PAF (and now possibly CRG) leads AG to more connections and ensure greater visibility for Marfa Invitational and any other projects she's got on the horizon...
