Thinking of Muhammad al-Durrah

 I follow @jewishvoiceforpeace with trepidation. There are days when I am inspired by their contents & days when my heart breaks. I was 14 when I learned about the Holocaust. My soul shattered & I stopped talking to God for 10 years. A God that allows the Holocaust to happen wasn't one I want in my life.

Slowly, I allow myself to learn about the Holocaust, giving in to pain, anger, & tears, searching for hope & healing. There are stories of Catholics & Christians hiding & protecting Jewish children putting themselves & their family in danger. Following Jewishvoiceforpeace is like seeing these stories in action. You don't support a cause because you share the same faith or come from the same country. You speak up against what is wrong because it is wrong and it is always right to speak up against acts of evil.

I don't blame Israel for not realizing that what they are doing to the Palestinian people is what was done to the Jewish people during the Holocaust. I blame it on the nature of humans & our ability to forget and our greatest weakness of dividing people into them & us. I am not Jewish or Muslim. I am not Christian or any religion for that matter. I worship & pray to god on my own terms. I talked to the Hindu gods & the Greek gods. I talked to Jesus, Buddha & the Archangels. I love fiercely & fight to the death to protect those I love in many of my lives. I carry scars across many lifetimes.

My soul shattered in learning about what Israel is doing to Palestine in the same way that it shattered when I learned about the Holocaust. This is how I know it is wrong. Our soul always knows. Our soul transcends the "them vs. us" mentality. Wrong is always wrong. Evil shakes your core. There is no excuse for it. You can lie, hide, & manipulate the story to fit your agenda because you have the power to do it but I guarantee you, your children's children will know and condemn you for it. The soul awakens. It's the evolution of love, the evolution of the soul. It isn't happening as fast as I want to see it but it is happening. I pray for Israel and Palestine. Their ability to get along is the measure of our soul's evolution.
