Asking Friends for Help

This article was sent to me, which is a commencement speech at Swarthmore college in 2007 by Marcia Grant, Alexandra Grant’s mother. People have mentioned before that both her parents are accomplished in academia. Interesting speech but in particular the part “that you take the risk of making real the ideas and dreams that you have in your heads; that you ask the help of your friends and families in making them happen; and that you, too, keep your learning curves steep!” Alexandra Grant has certainly take to heart on asking “friends” for help. Getting her arts added to the MOCA collection was through the help of a “friend” or someone who may have been more than a friend as the rumor goes. Getting her book the Artist’s Prison published was through the help of a “friend” or a “boyfriend” if we were to believe what her friend Jennifer Tilly told @pagesix

I wonder if there is any parental advice on what to do if you are ruining your friend’s image and reputation by getting “help” from them. Where is the line that should not be crossed? I received a confirmation that Jessica Fleischmann is no longer with Xartistsbooks. It was a very diplomatic response that she was proud of her work in designing some of the earlier books for Xartistsbooks and she is no longer involved but Xartistsbooks continues to make beautiful books as does her own studio.

The partnership with Xartistsbooks has decreased in number and Alexandra Grant was originally supposed to attend Marfa with the Ryan Lowell Project gallery but is now attending with Ochi gallery and it is all very interesting.
